Welcome to the Print & Make Workshops




The workshop is available for you to come down and use but first you will need to complete some safety inductions

The facilities include:

Hand tools area (large benches and access to hand tools)
Machine shop (bandsaws, sanding machines, pillar drills etc)
Digital room (Laser cutters & CNC routers)
Casting room
Spray booth
Shop (model making materials & stationery)
Specialist technicians on hand to help you.

You will be able to login to the portal using the following link Training Portal with your university credentials. (if you cannot login please email matworks@sheffield.ac.uk with your details and we will look into it)

Some are mandatory to access certain areas. EVERYONE will need to do some basic safety training (module 1.General Workshop Induction) if they want to visit the workshop. 

This applies to those who have previously used the George Porter Workshop, you will have to complete the new induction modules below. ALL inductions completed before 18th September 2023 are NOT VALID.

In order to access the Machine Shop, please complete the online training modules listed below. Once you have completed all parts of the machine training you will need to complete an in person practical session of around 45 minutes (within 1 week of completing all online inductions) to demonstrate understanding and competency on each machine. Only then will you be able to use the machine shop. These will be available Monday to Thursday (mornings) every week. Bookings can be made up to a maximum of 4 days in advance. (This applies to both laser cutter bookings and in person inductions)

2.3 Basic Machine Shop Induction (Part 3 - Scroll Saw)                                 Mandatory to use machine shop
2.4 Basic Machine Shop Induction (Part 4 - Pillar Drills)                                 Mandatory to use machine shop
2.5 Basic Machine Shop Induction (Part 5 - Sanding Machines)                    Mandatory to use machine shop

Optional (in addition to the above) advanced machines for more experienced users (Y3 and MArch only)

3.1 Advanced Machine Shop Induction (Part 1 Horizontal Sander)                 Both parts of module 3 must be completed in addition to completing all parts of modules 1 & 2
3.2 Advanced Machine Shop Induction (Part 2 Mitre Saw)                              Both parts of module 3 must be completed in addition to completing all parts of modules 1 & 2

After completing modules 1 to 2.5

Bookable in person inductions can be made using our booking site SimplyBookMe, Only book for yourself using your university email as you will get confirmation and the ability to cancel. Make sure you complete all of modules 1.0 through to 2,5 before you turn up for your in person Machine Shop Induction.
