Just a glimpse of some of the recent 3rd year Architecture group projects that have been constructed at George Porter workshops over the last few weeks. Great work guys!

Christmas Clear Out

Projects are due to finish and the workshop is shutting down for 2 weeks.

During this time we will be having a thorough clear out and tidy up. Anything that is not stored on racking AND clearly labelled to keep will be recycled, reused or disposed of.

Help us to keep your area clean by clearing out both your wanted and unwanted items before closing time Friday.

Copper and Brass Sheet

We now have a new stock of copper sheet on the roll @ a thickness of 0.25mm 

On trial is copper and brass sheet @ a thickness of 0.50mm in various sizes.

CHRISTMAS HOURS

Just so that everyone is aware, here are the Christmas hours for George Porter:

Friday 19th December from 16:00 we are CLOSED until Monday 5th January when we will Re-open at 09:00

After that it is business as usual, so if you need to access the facilities come on down...

Bike Shed at George Porter

A number of you were wondering where you can leave your bikes whilst at the George Porter Workshops.  We have an excellent, safe bike shed here, that is overlooked all day, well lit and offers both covered and uncovered storage.

If you are on your bike, please leave it here as bikes fastened in any other location will be removed.

How to find the bike shed

Step 1...


Come through the gate and past the gate house, turn right around the back of the temporary buildings. You will see a small sign on the wall.

Step 2...


Walk all of the way to the bottom of the building to where the car parking begins 

Step 3...


Turn right again and you will see a footpath leading around the back of the building

Step 4...


Turn right once more and you will see the bike shed in front of you.

Laser Cutting

Bookings are being taken for laser cutting, the extraction is (fingers crossed) fully operational.

Please don't book any more than 2 hours per week in total on the lasers, to allow access for all. If you are working on a group project, then book using different members emails to avoid cancellation

Unless you are booking 30 minutes only, please do not make bookings part way through the hour as this can create lots of unusable small sessions for others.

SAFETY INDUCTIONS

Bookings are now being taken for full safety inductions allowing machinery access at George Porter Materials Workshop.

New slots have been added to the calender, they are 0915 - 1030 on Wednesdays and Fridays most weeks, a maximum of 10 places are available. 

Please see the Safety Induction page for time slots, which start Wednesday 19th November.
10 places are available per hour.

We've had a tidy up and furniture rearrangement. The space is now ready for use by all. (The stored lockers will be removed soon).

NEW workshop facilities

Our new George Porter facilities are up and running offering far superior workshop facilities for architecture than we have ever had previously. Please see new information about these facilities on these web pages and pay a visit as soon as you can.

NEW Online, remote booking

You can now book the laser cutters and CNC router from anywhere in the world with an internet browser! See the booking page for instructions.

Over the summer we have bought a huge amount of new equipment. Please have a look through the pages here to see what is available for your use.

NEW hand toolkits for loan

NEW. Hand toolkits available for loan. From George Porter and in a day or two from the floor 15 Reprographics unit in the Arts Tower.

There will be a full website update on Friday of this week. This will provide all the information you need to start accessing and using the workshop facilities.

Chip and Pin payment

Payment can now be made using chip and pin. Due to operating costs there is a minimum transaction of £2.00.

Rhino for laser cutting

We've installed Rhino on both laser cutter PCs. You can laser cut from Rhino directly if you prefer.

Small laser cutter out of action

We've got a problem with the small Epilog I'm afraid. Hopefully we'll resolve this by the end of the week. The large Epilog had its laser replaced a week ago so hopefully no more problems with it (for a while).
