Clear acrylic is back in stock!

New Moulds

We are starting new a collection of moulds for casting and vacuum forming. You can see the samples on the wall above the vacuum former. 

We also have a new stock of PETG in 2mm which is ideal for crystal clear vacuum forming. A sample vac form is on the wall so come down and have a look!

Christmas Opening

OPENING HOURS / CLEAR OUT

Projects are due to finish and the workshop is shutting down for 2 weeks.

Opening hours over the break are as follows:

Friday 18th December 16:30 - Monday 4th January 08:30 - CLOSED

Monday 4th January 08:30 - Normal operating hours will resume.

During the break we will be having a thorough clear out and tidy up. Anything that is not stored on racking AND clearly labelled to keep until next term (January 18th 2016) will be recycled, reused or disposed of.

Help us to keep your area clean by clearing out both your wanted and unwanted items before 4:30pm Friday 18th December.

Please place all reusable materials on the recycling racks, the storage racking is for models in progress only due to the limited space!

Illustrator for Laser Cutting!!

We are still awaiting upgrade to Creative Cloud for lasers 2 & 3. This will be completed during the Christmas break as we need to take the machines out of service for a couple of days to make the changes.

If you have a booking on either of these machines please save your files as CS5. This can be found in the options screen that appears after you have selected the file format you would like to save as.

Step 1 Select Adobe Illustrator (*.AI) as your file type and press save

Step 2 In the version drop down select CS5 and select OK.

New Size of Plywood

NEW PLY!!

We now have 3mm and 6mm birch ply in 300mm x 300mm sheets (all sizes approximate)

Great for small projects and suitable for laser cutting and machining.

WORKSHOP CLOSURE

The workshop will be closed:

Friday 4th September 4pm - Monday 21st September 8:30am

The handtools workshop on the 15th floor of the Arts Tower will be available and workshop staff can be found working between floors 16-18 if advice is needed.

Laser Booking Prices for 2015/16

We have a new pricing and payment system in operation for laser cutting this year (1st August 2015 until 31st July 2016)

At the online shop passes can be purchased for use, they are:

• Annual - £60.00 (term time only)        Maximum saving of £240!
• Semester - £35.00 (term time only)    Maximum saving of £115!
• Hourly - £5.00

Outside of term time hourly passes must be bought.

Passes do not negate the need for bookings, please use our online booking system here. Terms of use are also posted on this page.

Electrical Upgrades

We have some electrical upgrades taking place Monday 20th July - Tuesday 21st July.

This means that the power to the machine shop will be off.

The laser cutters and hand tool area will be unaffected.

Summer Clear Out

We request that anything you want to keep that is still in the workshops be removed by 1200 Thursday 11th June. Anything left after this time will be treated as waste and dealt with accordingly.

CNC Router

££££ 

We are now charging for CNC router time. You will be charged for the full amount of time you job takes to complete. 

If you are booked in and do not show up to monitor your job, we are also charging for this time, as you are holding up the queue significantly.

The trial charge rate is £1 per hour.

Easter Closure

We are getting some electrical upgrades on our laser cutters Friday 6th March. The laser cutters and CNC will therefore be out of action from 12pm

Green Impact @ George Porter

We have a new recycling system up and running at George Porter Workshops.

Please help us to recycle by leaving all usable off cuts, unwanted materials. If at the end of life, models can be broken back down into components for others to use, please do so.

Of course the flip side to leaving materials for others to use, is of course getting recycled materials for your own project. Please check the racking for anything suitable - as in incentive to participate we are running the scheme with all reused materials for FREE!

Above you can see the new storage ares for your materials, these are located in the Machine Shop at George Porter.

Keep the area tidy, with materials organised in a practical manner and please,  DO NOT store your models here!
